“Singer in a Mask”, Season 7, Episode 5: Hydra Disassembled

SPOILER: Don’t read ahead if you haven’t watched Season 7, Episode 5, “Singer in a Mask,” “Mask for a Duel – Round 2,” which aired April 6 on Fox.

It’s not an illusion, it really was the Vegas legends Penn and Teller who exposed on Wednesday night in the episode “Singer in a Mask”. Peng Gillette and his quiet partner Teller were disguised under Hydra’s three-headed outfit. (Scroll down to see the unmasking.)

And yes, it was Teller who sang for the most part – in two different voices, one like himself, and the other in an aristocratic style modeled on Rex Harrison’s “My Beautiful Lady.” (In fact, the duo called the voice “Rex.”)

It may be the only time you’ll ever hear Teller – the famous mute during all of Penn & Teller’s performances – actually talk. According to Gillette, with whom, of course, talked solo Variety – It was decided that Teller sang most of the songs, because Gillette’s loud voice is so recognizable.

“My voice has been so damaged by the years when I was rubbish that I only have one voice,” Gillette said. “I don’t have the ability to change my voice a bit. I really sound like me and I talk a lot, so our strategy was to make most of Teller’s singing so that those voices that no one knows were the ones you focused on. We also chose songs that we thought did not connect our age. “

Why did the duo agree to participate in “The Masked Singer”? Honestly, “When someone calls, we answer yes,” Gillette said. “We are the longest-running Las Vegas headliners in history. And we’ve included about a quarter of a billion people in our theater here at the Penn & Teller Theater. And we do it when people see us on TV. That’s why we like to do all sorts of things on TV, and we’re not very picky. “

But “The Masked Singer” stood out, he added, because “it’s so playful, so good in character and so cute that there really wasn’t even a minute of hesitation to go on the show. I like the kindness of this show. It seems that many of your competition shows are reveling in some unnecessary art, and this show is just happy. “

How was it inside that suit? “It was a hell of a hell,” he said. “But Teller and I spent time hiding in small places with each other. All our careers we have been trapped behind mirrored cabinets and little miserable places! Knocking was painful for me. This is the most sophisticated costume they have ever made. We were just inches from falling at any moment. “

Hydra was dismissed after performing “Sharp Dressed Man” by ZZ Top; Last week, Penn and Teller sang “Hey Soul Sister” on the train. This week’s “mega-hint” pretty much betrayed their identity: it was a deck of cards, a revealing hint for Vegas wizards. “How very interesting, deck of cards, it’s all jokes!” Said Hydra.

If Hydra continued the song “The Masked Singer”, Penn & Teller would perform “Karma Chameleon” from Culture Club, Gillette added.

In a duel to determine who will be exposed, Hydra and Armadillo clashed, performing “Walkin’ the Dog ”by Rufus Thomas (Armadillo) and“ Two Princes ”by Spin Doctors (Hydra).

As for Hydra, the invited expert Nicole Bayer understood: Penn & Teller. Ken Jeong guessed “Lego Batman” by Will Arnett and “Lego Joker” by Zach Goliath. Robin Tick thought it was South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker. Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg left “Sesame Street” to Bert and Ernie. Nicole Scherzinger went with Will Ferrell and John C. Riley.

(Other panel speculations previously included Stetler and Waldorf; “The Great Lebowski” by Jeff Bridges / John Goodman / Steve Buscemi; “Three Wives” by Chevy Chase / Steve Martin / Martin Short; guys from Lonely Island; and Trey Parker and Matt Stone).

Penn and Teller as Hydra join the list of unmasked celebrities, which also includes Christy Brinkley as Lemur, Jorge Garcia as Cyclops, Jordan Mailata as Tingamabob, Duff Goldman as Macterrier and Joe Buck as Baran.

So far, Firefly (“Team Good”) is scheduled for the finals.

“Singer in a Mask” entered season 7 with 15 participants who were divided into “Good, Bad and Pleasant.” This season’s costumes include GOOD: Teacher, Battleship, McTerrier, Firefly, Prince Frog; Bad: Hydra, Ram, Jack in the Box, Cyclops, Queen Cobra; INTERESTING: Mammoth, Tingamabob, Lemur, Space Rabbit, Miss Teddy.

Season 7 participants boast 112 film appearances, 15 Grammy nominations, eight Emmy nominations, seven Super Bowl appearances, two Hollywood Walk of Fame stars and two world records.

On the other hand, the show’s participants don’t seem to be fighting for the Golden Ear trophy, based on their first impressions of each performer in the mask (which McCarthy won twice but Scherzinger won last season) this season.
